Reader response draft #1

The article “Thinking about an Automatic Nutrient Dosing System for your commercial grow? Here’s what you need to know” (Advanced Nutrients, 2023) introduces an automatic nutrient dosing system. This system is a “mechanized nutrient delivery system” that delivers an accurate amount of nutrient solution to crops. The two main features of an automatic nutrient dosing system is the dosing pump and the Controller and monitoring kit. There are different types of dosing pumps which operate differently but they all serve the same function which is to deliver the appropriate level of nutrients and water to the crop (Advanced Nutrients, 2023). The controller and monitoring kit uses sensors which are placed in the nutrient solution tank which measures the pH and electrical conductivity (EC) levels. The controller then changes the dosage based on the readings of the monitor (Atlas Scientific, 2023). These two levels are important for crop growth as they affect how much nutrient is absorbed by the...

Summary Draft #1

The article “Thinking about an Automatic Nutrient Dosing System for your commercial grow? Here’s what you need to know” (Advanced Nutrients, 2023) introduces an automatic nutrient dosing system. This system is a “mechanized nutrient delivery system” that delivers an accurate amount of nutrient solution to crops. One Crucial feature of the Automated Nutrient Dosing System is its smart controllers. It is the brain of the system where it controls other key features of the system such as the pump modules and sensors. (Ag-Con, 2023) It also has cloud connectivity, which allows the user to monitor their plants in real time and control the dosing system remotely. Among its benefits, this system eliminates human error and the reduction of overall workloads (MORR, 2023). It also saves money in the long run as this system can bring about increased yield of higher quality crops while reducing waste of water and nutrients. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has a ‘30 by 30’ goal, “which aims to build...

Research pathway

Kevin and I have decided to research the indoor farming system because we felt it was relevant to Singapore. To kickstart our research, we relied on ChatGPT to provide us with an overview of different technologies and mechanisms used in indoor farming systems.  With the help of ChatGPT, we decided to narrow down to an automated nutrient delivery system. Using google and YouTube, we managed to gain more insights on the features of this automated nutrient delivery system. We then googled some indoor farms in Singapore using this technology and also companies that produce this delivery system. From this process, we also found out that the Singapore food agency (SFA) has a ‘30 by 30’ goal. The goal is to build up Singapore’s indoor farming systems such that it is capable of producing 30 percent of Singapore’s nutritional needs sustainably by 2030. From the articles, we have also identified the benefits and limitations of the system.

Formal Introductory Letter

Formal Introductory letter Dear Prof Blackstone, The purpose of this letter is to formally introduce myself and provide some background information. My name is Shaun, and I am a first year Mechanical Engineering student. I graduated from Ngee Ann polytechnic with a diploma in mechanical engineering and a minor in business management. Having taken design and technology as an O-level subject in secondary school, I learned to identify design problems. I was thrilled to identify one and come up with a prototype to potentially solve the problem. I came up with a fine motor skill toy that would enable toddlers to safely develop their motor skills. Through this journey, I enjoyed the time spent in workshops building my prototype from scratch and I developed an interest in creating useful items and eventually a passion for mechanical engineering. One of my strengths in communication is my respect for the person speaking, regardless of who they are. I would always allow the person speaking to...
